| | Winner of the Wilshire Award for Metadata Best Practices Announced | | Wilshire Conferences, Inc. and The Data Administration Newsletter (TDAN.com) have announced the winner of the 2007 Wilshire Award for Metadata Best Practices. From among a pool of exceptionally accomplished nominees, the panel of judges chose the BMO Financial Group (BMO) as this year’s recipient for its implementation of an outstanding, multi-faceted metadata initiative.
When asked what set BMO apart from the other nominees, Robert S. Seiner, Chairman of the judging panel and President of co-sponsor TDAN.com, said: “The judging among the top 3 finalists was very close on all criteria, but what ultimately swayed the judges to select BMO was the long-term commitment to their metadata program and the buy-in they’ve managed to achieve from throughout the organization. And, they were able to provide measurable evidence of their results.”
The MPO joins Wilshire Conferences and The Data Administration Newsletter in also congratulating 2007 award finalists Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota and the U.S. Department of Interior. The Wilshire Award honoring best practices in metadata management is given to an organization (corporation, government agency, educational institution) in recognition of business value, innovation, and technical excellence in the design and/or implementation of metadata as a critical component in IT and business success.
Nominees of the award undergo a comprehensive and rigorous 3-month submission and judging process. This begins with the submission of an application detailing the organization’s metadata program; and nominees must provide substantiated evidence of solution planning, objectives, measurement strategies, and outcomes. The evaluation includes two rounds of judging as well as an intensive, question and answer session with the submitting organization’s metadata leads. For more information about the Award, please visit Wilshire Conferences. | | MPO Holds Metadata Content Based Teleconference | | On January 4th, the MPO held the first in a series of metadata content based webinars and teleconferences. Abstract
Those of us who have been around in the data management community for a long time remember when “data lineage” used to be discussed; it was a Big Thing. Nowadays, if you use the term “data lineage” it has a sort of legacy connotation, of something old and musty. However, nothing could be further from the truth!
Data lineage is front and center stage these days in terms of: - Master Data Management
- Sensitive Data Tracing and Data Privacy
- Legal Investigations (“Data Forensics”)
- Reconstruction of Data Maps
- Compliance: Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPPA, etc.
Attend this webinar hosted by the Metadata Professional Organization and hear about how data lineage is making a comeback. Bonnie O'Neil is Senior Technical Consultant/Senior Data Architect at Project Performance Corporation, and is an internationally recognized expert on knowledge capture, business metadata, data architecture, business rules and the emerging field of semantics. She is a regular speaker at many conferences, and has also been a workshop leader at Meta Data/DAMA Conference, Oracle ODTUG, and the Business Rules Forum; she was the keynote speaker at an international conference on Data Quality in South Africa. She has been involved in strategic data management projects in both Fortune 500 companies and government agencies, and her expertise includes specialized skills such as data quality, profiling, semantic/data integration and migration. She is the author of two database books including Oracle Data Warehousing Unleashed, as well as over 40 articles and technical white papers. She is a Certified CIF/GIF Architect by Bill Inmon, the Father of Data Warehousing, and is a certified trainer for Mr. Inmon. She is currently working on her third book, co-authored by Mr. Inmon, on Business Metadata, to be released by Morgan Kaufman in the summer/early fall of 2007.
